The customer
The Italian Equestrian Sports Federation (FISE) is the body that guides and coordinates the entire Italian equestrian movement: it establishes the rules of the disciplines, trains and certifies instructors and competition officials, manages memberships and registries of athletes and horses, overseeing compliance with regulations and protecting animal welfare. Founded in 1926 and recognized by the International Equestrian Federation, FISE organizes and supervises more than 1,200 events each year, including competitions, federal circuits and regional competitions, representing the point of reference for the entire Italian equestrian movement.
The problem
For the Arena FISE 2025 event, the federation had set a goal of increased environmental responsibility. The body wanted its efforts to be more than just implementing sustainable practices during the event, so it needed a multidimensional solution capable of integrating the various requirements, namely measuring the environmental footprint, analyzing data to define a structured offset plan, and identifying certified and verifiable carbon offsetting projects.
R1 Lease’s response
R1 Lease has supported FISE at all stages of its journey towards sustainability, with a consultative, technical and operational approach, starting by providing its expertise and ending with coordinating actions in the field. The company thus built a comprehensive strategy, turning the client’s wishes into concrete and effective results.
The solution
To measure emissions, R1Lease first defined the scope of the analysis, identifying transportation as the area of greatest impact and collecting data on the mobility of employees, counselors, suppliers, and relocation of the 495 horses involved.
Based on this information, the climate footprint was quantified, applying internationally recognized methodologies, following the approach indicated by Product Category Rule PCR-2022-0004 Events and incorporating updated emission factors (DEFRA 2025 and IDEMAT 2025).
The results enabled the development of an offset plan that combined the purchase of certified carbon credits with the planting of 80 Paulownia trees in Italy. This allowed offsetting tons of CO₂, more than 60% of the estimated emissions.
In parallel, FISE implemented sustainable practices during the event, such as the use of recyclable furniture and reusable water bottles, the adoption of LED lighting, and recycling collection. Finally, the work was enhanced through communication and awareness-raising initiatives.
The outcome
The project has combined scientific measurement, certified compensatory actions, concrete interventions in the field and cultural involvement, laying the foundations for a progressive reduction of environmental impact in future editions of the event. In this sense, the strategy deployed by R1Lease for Arena FISE 2025 represents not just an isolated intervention, however timely, but the real start of a virtuous and structured model for the sustainable organization of events, in line with climate neutrality goals to 2050.
