The project started from the need to overcome the critical issues generated by a platform that was no longer adequate and to fulfill new regulatory requirements for security and digitization. R1 S.p.A. carried out a thorough assessment of the client’s IT infrastructure, then proceeded to design and implement a hyperconverged solution based on Nutanix technology in the first instance. Application migration was managed in a phased manner, ensuring business continuity and minimizing the effort impact for the BPLazio Group IT team.
Description of the client
The Banca Popolare del Lazio Group operates in the Lazio region through the branches of Banca popolare del Lazio and its subsidiary BLU banca The bank’s historical characteristic is its proximity and closeness to the territory, and in recent years it has made significant investments aimed at improving service to its customers by offering personalized and innovative services through multichannel platforms and with a focus on environmental and social sustainability issues. Also part of the Banca popolare del lazio Group, which today has 63 branches in all provinces of Lazio, are IFE, Istituto Finanziario Europeo, a financial intermediary specializing in salary-backed loans, and San Pietro Broker, an insurance broker specializing in business non-life insurance.
The scenario
Prior to the implementation of this radical technological paradigm shift, BPLazio Group’s infrastructure had reached its maximum tolerance limit. The operating environment was characterized by significant application slowdowns, criticality in the management of system upgrades, high pressure on the IT team, and increased risks related to growing regulatory complexity (DORA, NIS2).Attempts at expansion were hindered both by industrial evolutions of traditionally key players in the IT sector and by budget constraints, which were particularly relevant for a small banking entity.
The Business Challenge
The main challenge was to ensure business continuity and compliance with new regulations, while avoiding a significant increase in investment costs and resources deployed. The opportunity taken had as a priority objective the centralization of management, simplification of upgrade procedures and maximum security of data at rest, while ensuring agility and scalability for the implementation of new applications and services.
The solution
R1 S.p.A. supported the client in selecting and designing the most suitable solution. The implementation of Nutanix hyperconverged architecture enabled centralized management of Data Center assets-servers, storage, and networking-through a single console, integrating automated pre-check systems on upgrades. This choice made it possible to simplify governance, significantly reduce risks and costs, and prepare the Group to flexibly scale core systems, both in view of future projects and natural growth related to core activities, and with a vision oriented toward technological evolutions such as, first and foremost, self-consistent Disaster Recovery.
